Holst composed this suite in 1933 after his success with "The Planets". You will find different challenges in each of the three movements of this work. This suite exhibits Holst's melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and stylitic maturity at their highest level. Holst used many folk songs in his compositions and this works, including this one. The melody in the third movement is a folk song he heard played by a piper when watching marionettes in 1929. It is a beautiful suite that you and your students will enjoy performing.
