Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy wrote two symphonies that carried geographical subtitles. The "Italian" was written in 1833 and the "Scottish" in 1842. The "Italian", Symphony #4, gives impressions of the people and landscapes of this beautiful country. It is from this symphony that this short minuet arrangement is taken. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy is known for the beauty of his melodic themes, and this music certainly fits that category.

Estimated Performance Time: 2:00

Technical Notes: The convertible bass line is labeled "Flexible Bass Line (optional)". The keyboard percussion part is labeled "Mallet Percussion" and is for bells. The 1st percussion part is for snare drum and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is for triangle and suspended cymbal.

Note to the conductor: This music should be approached in a somewhat gentle manner. Soft dynamics must be strictly observed and louder dynamics should be thought of as "full" as opposed to loud. The beginning phrase in the flute and oboe, then picked up by the trumpet in measure 3, sets the melodic style. The main theme begins with the anacrusis to measure 6 and should have a seamless flow (without being rushed). All crescendos throughout should be very subtle. Moving eighth note patterns should be rhythmically consistent without ever clouding the melodic line.

Many breath marks are indicated throughout the piece to help establish a sense of ensemble at the beginning of phrases. Measures 25 and 26 lead into a slightly more confident statement of the melodic line. Slight dynamic contrasts in measures 30-34 provide an opportunity to show the musicality and maturity of the ensemble. Good air control and tone production are necessary at measure 39, especially for those with the melodic line. This leads to a good, full sound at measure 48. Accents commencing at measure 50 should not be too harsh. Make special note of the articulation in measure 68, in clarinet 1 and trumpet 1.
