It was originally recorded in 1965 with Shelly Manne on drums, and John Williams directing the music of Gershwin. Shelly Manne was a phenomenal drummer who pioneered jazz drumming and rhythms. Manne died unexpectedly in 1984. Steve Houghton is one of the top jazz drummers today and he got the idea to re-do this collection. He pulled his ensemble, Steve Houghton Quintet, and the University of North Texas Two O'Clock Lab Band together and recorded this album in Manne's memory.
