This exciting composition is a dramatic example of Claude T. Smith's superb mastery of the concert band idiom. The number opens with a brief Maestoso based on the Anthem theme. This is followed by an Allegro rich in harmonic and rhythmic textures which leads into the first full statement of the theme. Here is a strong contest or festival selection high in musical appeal without undue rhythmic or technical difficulty. Estimated Performance Time: 4:30 Technical Notes: The percussion parts are marked for snare drum, chimes, timpani, xylophone, cymbals, and bells. Notes to the director: The melodic line should be expressive at all times. Do not rush the chorale at measure 65. At measure 85 the eighth note figures should be very light and the accompanying countermelody should be even lighter. At measure 121 the timpani must have a strong forceful sound.
