One can only imagine what it might be like if the animals ran the zoo! This and other questions will be considered in this programmatic original work for band, incorporating all manner of animal and jungle noises. Estimated Performance Time: 2:30 Technical Notes: The 1st percussion part is marked for snare drum, bass drum, and claves. The 2nd percussion part is marked for tom-toms, sizzle cymbal, suspended cymbal, and shaker. The 3rd percussion part is marked for maracas, rain stick, and bongos. Note To The Conductor: The role of percussion is prominent in this atmospheric score, but as noted, it can be performed with just two players (using the percussion 2 part). The opening measures, through measure 17, should create a mood of mystery and foreboding. At measure 18, the accents should be forceful and detached. The response from the low end of the band should be prominent as well. Look for dynamic effect (i.e. at measures 27 and 29) to enhance the emotional impact of the music. The pencil tapping sounds should create a continuous rhythmic pulse that adds a primal film score effect to the music. (This will also ensure that students come to rehearsal with something to mark their parts.) Keep this under control. The jungle noises should further enhance the programmatic scenario of a planet over run with monkeys and other kinds of animals, affording the band an opportunity to exercise its vocal abilities (but only where indicated). The quality of the music changes at measure 62, calling for a chorale-like approach to the "legato" style that is indicated, a hymn in effect. A return to the accented style at measure 80 will bring the piece to an energized conclusion. Composer(s): This piece was composed by Stephen Bulla. Publisher: This piece was published by Curnow Music Press. Series: This piece is part of the series "Curnow Passport Series".
