This is a wonderful addition to beginning literature, with varied textures for the beginning ensembles. "Nocturnal Dances" begins with a rhythmic motif, and will offer the opportunity for teaching of listening, reinforcement of independent counting, and due to the driving nature of the composition, will be well received in any performance. Technical Notes: The bells part is labeled "mallet percussion" in the score. The 1st percussion part is marked for suspended cymbal, snare drum, and bass drum. The 2nd percussion part is marked for wind chimes, suspended cymbal, crash cymbals, shaker, and claves. "Nocturnal Dances" was inspired by a poem from "Stonehenge" by Thomas Stokes Salmon. Written in 1823, Salmon's words help solidify the myth and mystery surrounding the ancient monument that stands to this day: "Here oft, when Evening sheds her twilight ray. And glids with fainter beam departing day, With breathless gaze, and cheek with terror pale, The lingering shephard startles at the tale, How, at deep midnight, bye the moon's chill glance, Unearthly forms prolong the viewless dance; While on each whisp'ring breeze that murmurs by, His busied fancy hears the hollow sigh." Composer(s): This piece was composed by Robert W. Smith. Publisher: This piece was published by Warner Brothers Publications. Series: This piece is part of the series "Belwin Beginning Band Series".
